Fill that Empty Void: Give, Share and Be of Service to Humanity

I recently received a phone call from a man interested in a reiki energy healing session. He kept me on the phone for quite a while explaining to me how he's felt an emptiness in his life ever since his wife left him. He went on to tell me that he has a great job, makes plenty of money and managed to work his way up the corporate ladder from being a nobody to a somebody. He has all types of women to sleep with, has done just about anything and everything a person can do in life and yet still feels unfulfilled. He told me how he recently paid a young lady to come over and just lie down on his chest. Apparently she was supposed to do more... Perhaps have sex with him? But really, he just wanted company and someone to hold. The longer I was on the phone with this gentleman, the more I knew that he just needed to talk to someone and get some positive energy. He was lonely perhaps? But the conversation made me wonder. What is this empty void that so many of us feel? And how can we fill it? I believe the answer is to be of service to humanity.

Every so often I like to read spiritual books. One of my favorite studies is the study of Kabbalah. Kabbalah (also spelled Kabalah, Cabala, Qabala), sometimes translated as “mysticism” or "occult knowledge", is a part of Jewish tradition that deals with the essence of God. Kabbalah is different than many religious and spiritual practices as it is more about losing oneself than finding oneself, and becoming more other- centered and less ego- centered. I believe many answers can be found in Kabbalah, especially as to the reason for this empty void feeling so many of us feel and how to eliminate it and feel whole again. Now, I am not writing this article to promote Kabbalah or any other religious practice. I believe certain hidden truths can be ascertained through most religious and spiritual studies, however Kabbalah rings a bell for me when people speak of feeling a void in their life, even when they have everything a person could want or need.

According to Kabbalah, in the beginning there was light. Space, time and motion did not exist yet. Only light! The nature of this light was to give. It had a 'desire to share' yet there was no one to share with as this light was all that existed. So the light created a vessel to receive everything that it had to offer. The vessel's job was to receive- 'desire to receive.' Everything was perfect or so it seemed. The light kept giving and the vessel kept receiving. That is until the vessel decided that it too wanted to give. It had inherited the desire to give from the light. However it's only job was to receive and so the only thing it could do was push back on the light and say “No more!” The light understood and withdrew. Once this restriction took place, the vessel exploded into zillions and zillions of pieces. The pieces of this shattered Vessel became all the fragments of matter and energy that make up our entire universe - atoms, animals, people, plants, everything. In this way, the Vessel could share with itself and with the Light, thereby becoming the cause of its own fulfillment.

Perhaps this is an over simplified version of the big bang theory? But there is a point to why I tell this story. We are all fragments of the vessel. This vessel was created by the light to receive, but in fact gets much joy out of giving as it's essence is of the light whose primarily job is to give. I believe the empty void that so many people feel is in fact a void from not giving! Not sharing! We could have everything we want in this entire world, perhaps universe, and still feel empty...Why? Because we are meant to give and share! We are not meant to hoard everything we have and take it to the grave with us. We are meant to share! I am quite familiar with this empty uneasy feeling as I have felt this way in the past, as if something was missing and I didn't quite know what it was. Now I realize what was missing! It wasn't money (although money is helpful when living in this money-based society), it wasn't a significant other.... what was missing was the act of giving and sharing! As a reiki healer, author of a spiritual poetry book- “A Lover in the Land of Hell” and active blogger on topics of health and spirituality, I feel I am living my purpose which is to be of service to humanity. This consistent act of giving and sharing has eliminated the feeling that something is missing in my life, and the empty void (perhaps it was in my heart) is now filled. Please consider filling your empty void with the compassionate act of giving and sharing. Be of service to humanity and see how much your life changes for the better!
