About a month and a half ago, in April 2018, I found myself, once again, struggling with the same old persistent headache that I have been plagued with every month for as long as I can remember! I've been told that these headaches are hormonal. In fact, I was diagnosed with a hormonal imbalance among quite a few other health issues! But I'll explain more about this in a moment... It was around mid-April that I was suffering with my usual headache and wondering what I could do to solve my dilemma. A container of Sports Salts sitting on my kitchen counter suddenly caught my attention. It was something I had purchased but never actually used. This particular bottle of sports salts contains Potassium Bicarbonate, Magnesium Carbonate and Himalayan Pink Salt. The purpose is to take these salt pills before exercising to stay hydrated. But since I wasn't doing much exercising, due to low energy levels, I simply ignored them. But today, mid-April, amidst a terrible headache, my thoughts about the sports salts had suddenly changed. “Perhaps salt could help relieve my headache?” I thought! Could salt, with all the minerals it contains, be the answer? And so I proceeded to take one salt pill and go to sleep for the night. The next morning my headache was gone! Yet this was peculiar since my headaches usually last longer and I tend to wake up with them the next day. Did the salt pill actually work? I wondered!
So I started searching online to find out more about salt curing headaches. I happened to stumble across a website called The Water Cure. This is where things gets interesting! The water cure involves drinking salt with water, instead of just drinking plain water. But we are not talking about chemically treated iodized salt here! The salt that should be used is Himalayan Pink Salt and/or Sea Salt that has not been chemically treated or processed so that it maintains all of its natural minerals. Supposedly there are quite a few health benefits to drinking water this way. As I continued scrolling through the website I found countless testimonials from people who have cured their health issues and illnesses simply by drinking salt water. Fascinating! I personally drink reverse osmosis alkaline water that has been ionized. This water is purified through reverse osmosis and then re-mineralized to have high alkalinity. I find that I feel much better drinking reverse osmosis alkaline water as opposed to just reverse osmosis water which is devoid of any minerals. But is it possible that alkalized water is just not good enough and that even more minerals are needed? I thought perhaps I should try this water cure for myself since I am still dealing with a few of my own health issues.
The protocol for the water cure is to place 1/8-1/4 of a teaspoon of himalayan or sea salt under your tongue and allow it to dissolve. Then drink the salt with approximately 10% of your body weight in ounces of water. So if you weigh 100 lbs you will drink 10 ounces of water with your salt. FYI the best water to use is actually spring water, not reverse osmosis alkaline. But reverse osmosis alkaline is still better than tap water! You definitely do not want to use tap water! You will drink your water like this 5-6 times a day so that you end up drinking approximately ½ of your body weight in ounces daily. So if you weigh 100 lbs you are drinking at least 50 ounces of water a day! You should drink your water this way within 20 minutes of waking up in the morning, approximately 30-45 minutes before your first meal. I eat a late breakfast, so I actually end up drinking two doses of the water cure before breakfast. Then drink your water this way again approximately 2-2 ½ hours after eating and again approximately every 2-2 ½ hours throughout the day. You should always be drinking your water approximately 30-45 minutes before meals and not drinking water during meals with the exception of a few sips of water. Drinking too much water during a meal may negatively impact digestion. It could dilute stomach acid that is needed to properly digest your food. Finally, drink your last water of the day approximately 30 minutes before bed. This is the water cure!
I decided to email the website to ask a few questions to make sure I understood everything correctly. I wanted to know if I could use salt sole
with the protocol instead of just salt. For those of you that don't know, salt sole is salt that has been super saturated in water. It is supposed to be better for you than using just plain salt. I also wanted to know which salt was better, himalayan or sea salt. And finally, I wanted to know if adding salt pills to the protocol was appropriate. I received a response from the executive director Jonathon Steele. I was told that salt sole was just as good as using plain salt. In regards to the type of salt, it appears that celtic works better for vegetarians and himalayan salt works better for meat eaters. However, some do not find much benefit from either and try even more exotic salts. I was already using himalayan salt, but since I was about to go back on a vegetarian diet I decided to invest in some sea salt as well. In regards to adding salt pills to the regimen, Jonathon was not familiar with salt pills but said it sounded interesting.
And so I began the water cure protocol on April 25th 2018! Since I weighed
approximately 112 lbs I was planning to drink 12 ounces of water 5-6 times a day. On the first morning I placed ¼ teaspoon of salt sole under my tongue and followed it down with 12 ounces of reverse osmosis alkaline water. I would use spring water, however reverse osmosis alkaline is more affordable for me. I only pay $1 to refill a glass gallon at my local water store. What I noticed immediately was astounding! I felt very relaxed. Surprisingly relaxed! I tend to experience some anxiety in the morning time and usually take supplements to combat this. However, after drinking my first salt water of the day, I was profoundly calm and didn't need to take any supplements! Interesting!
I soon discovered that I would have to add other supplements (supplements I was already currently taking) to my water cure drink because there was not enough time in a day to take everything I needed to take and do the water cure separately. So 2 out of my 5-6 daily water cure drinks included a grass and moringa powder. Another one of my 5-6 daily water cure drinks included a sports salt pill, sodium bi-carbonate powder (baking soda) and 16 drops of food grade hydrogen peroxide (actually 8 drops because it is 50% diluted with water) and finally my last drink of the day included a sports salt pill, sodium bi-carbonate powder (baking soda) and either coconut vinegar or apple cider vinegar. At first I purchased and made a salt sole out of Baleine sea salt from France, however I soon learned that most sea salts these days contain microscopic pieces of plastic. So I opted to replace this with Redmond Real salt from Utah. Redmond salt is an ancient sea salt protected by volcanic ash that is untouched by modern day pollution! Awesome!
Well, it all seemed to be working out quite well! In fact, I noticed that I no longer needed to take any supplements in the morning to combat morning anxiety. The positive effects of the water cure started on the very first day and continued to improve daily! I also noticed on a few occasions that I was feeling extremely relaxed and happy while driving, even in LA traffic!
I couldn't believe I was feeling so good and this was all because of drinking salt water! Then, about 2 weeks into the protocol, I noticed that my energy levels had increased quite significantly. I had more energy to exercise. So I started swimming twice a week instead of just once. I also purchased a new pair of rollerblades and started rollerblading as well!
But the biggest shock came at the end of the month when my menstrual cycle normalized! I actually had a 28 day cycle! The last 3 months had been 25, 24 and 25 days. All of a sudden, after following the water cure protocol for a month, I have a 28 day menstrual cycle for the first time in who knows how long! Naturally I was super excited and started telling everyone about the water cure. So that's my story! I will continue following this protocol indefinitely and continue writing updates as more healing unfolds. Amazing! Salt and water! So simple! Who knew?
UPDATE October 17, 2018
Well, unfortunately my menstrual cycle only normalized for the first month after starting the water cure. So it's not the cure all I had hoped for. However I still continue following the water cure regimen as I feel much more hydrated doing so and the anxiety I used to experience has become pretty much non-existent except for tiny moments here and there. I do believe the water cure has something to do with this. Therefore I still recommend trying the water cure and seeing how it can benefit you!
