Being Helpful and Putting Smiles on People's Faces Is What Really Makes Me Feel Good!
As I write this article I am feeling pretty exhausted... I just hosted the most fabulous wonderfully successful birthday party for my now 7 year old step daughter. It was amazing! Everyone who RSVP'd showed up. My step daughter received tons of gifts. And she admitted to me that it was the best birthday she ever had!
As I was preparing for her birthday party I found myself feeling really good. I knew that I was doing an incredibly good deed for my step daughter and so I didn't let the price tag of the event bring me down. It seemed like I was on an endless birthday shopping spree for approximately a week and a half. There appeared to be no end in sight to the spending. There was always a need for something else....
However, in the midst of preparing for my step daughter's best birthday ever I encountered some very interesting synchronistic events... I started running into people who needed my help! Ofcourse this always seems to happen to me because I am always hoping to run into someone who needs my help. I actually get a high off of helping people... and animals and insects. It makes me feel really good. But the past week and a half seemed to bring even more people to me than usual...
I was at a medical building with my step daughter picking up a prescription for her dad. An old african lady who barely spoke english approached me asking to use my phone. I told her that I left it in the car and had to go get it. We happened to be in a very racist neighborhood and I felt that she knew from my energy that I would help her. I allowed her to make 3 phone calls on my phone. She finally found someone to pick her up. I think she was stranded at the medical building. She gave me a huge hug, smiled and thanked me. That whole experience made my entire day!
Then as I was walking to pick up my step daughter from school I saw an asian couple (with two kids in the back seat) struggling to jump start their car. I asked them if they needed help. They didn't seem to want to bother me but at the same time they were in dire need of some help. They told me that their jump starter wouldn't work. So I went to my car and let them borrow my jump starter which started their car. I could feel their relief. They didn't understand why their jump starter didn't work. So I asked them if they ever used it before. They told me no. I told them that they probably needed to plug in their jump starter to charge it. I pointed out the plug to them on the jump starter. They had absolutely no idea that the jump starter needed to be charged up. Another good deed accomplished. I was buzzing with joy!
Twice I helped the same foreign delivery guy who didn't speak any english find an apartment in my apartment complex. My neighbor kept giving him the wrong address! I sent my mother an organic whole food vitamin that has apparently saved her life as she claims! I've helped countless ants who have struggled to swim and climb out of the sugar water placed on my balcony for the hummingbirds. And I feed the hummingbirds and squirrels at my building everyday! Finally, after my step daughter's birthday party I gave away cake and ice cream to a neighbor who attended the party... I delivered more cake and cup cakes to the kind female manager at the 99 cent store who supplied me with enough tutus for all the girls who attended the birthday party... and on Purim I delivered even more cake, cup cakes and ice cream to the leasing office staff at my building! They were ecstatic!
When my step daughter's birthday party had ended I was alone in my apartment complex's recreation room cleaning up. My neighbor, and the mother of one of the kids who attended the birthday party, showed up in the room. She had been drinking wine and she felt bad. I think I must've spent an hour and a half listening to all of her problems and trying to be helpful. She was sad, fearful, in bad health... and I was trying my best to be a good friend and neighbor to her. We really hardly know each other, but I knew that she needed someone to talk to... and what made it all the more ironic was that I was talking to her while wearing a clown costume! I had a lot of cleaning to do, but I let it go... I waited until she ended the conversation to resume cleaning. I really hope that the conversation we had was helpful to her.
Now that's a lot of good deeds! And you know what? I keep wondering who will pop up next... These are the kinds of moments that bring me joy! I look forward to helping more people and animals (insects and plants) and putting more smiles on people's faces. This is what I live for! This is why I'm here!
